This document is about Caleb (son of Jephunneh). For other homonyms, please refer to the Caleb document. Caleb is the son of Jephunneh of the tribe of Judah. He was one of the spies Moses sent to scout Canaan before entering the land after the Exodus. He is the son of Jephunneh, a Kenizzite from the tribe of Judah, and the grandfather of Othniel.
Numbers 32:12Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation who had done evil in Yahweh’s sight was consumed.
Joshua 15:17When she came, she had him ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey, and Caleb said, “What do you want?”

Numbers 14:6They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.Numbers 14:7If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.Numbers 14:8Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”Numbers 14:9But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
이런 믿음의 선포로 인하여 여호수아(눈의 아들)과 갈렙만이 가나안 땅에 들어갈 수 있게 되었다. 갈렙은 그의 나이 85세가 되었을 때 자신이 아직도 건강함을 이야기하며 계속해서 믿음의 성취를 이야기 하였다.
Joshua 14:6I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart.Joshua 14:7Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Yahweh my God.Joshua 14:8Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed Yahweh my God.’Joshua 14:9“Now, behold, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, behold, I am eighty-five years old, today.Joshua 14:10As yet I am as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me. As my strength was then, even so is my strength now for war, to go out and to come in.Joshua 14:11Now therefore give me this hill country, of which Yahweh spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that Yahweh will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as Yahweh said.”
갈렙은 여호수아로부터 헤브론 땅과 그 주변을 받았는데, 그 때 그곳은 아직 이민족이 점령하고 있던 곳이었다. 갈렙은 이를 믿음으로 취하고 또 그 지역을 점령한 사람에게는 자신의 딸 악사를 주기로 하였다. 이에 갈렙의 조카 옷니엘이 그 땅을 점령하고 악사를 아내로 삼는다.
Joshua 15:13Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.Joshua 15:14He went up against the inhabitants of Debir: now the name of Debir before was Kiriath Sepher.Joshua 15:15Caleb said, “He who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife.”Joshua 15:16Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.Joshua 15:17When she came, she had him ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey, and Caleb said, “What do you want?”Joshua 15:18She said, “Give me a blessing. Because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.Joshua 15:19This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families.

Judges 3:9Yahweh’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.
