This article is about Nathan (prophet). For other homonyms, refer to the Nathan article. Nathan was a prophet who was active during the time of David and Solomon. When David decided to build the temple, Nathan supported it but conveyed that because David had shed too much blood, the temple would be built through Solomon, and God's kingdom would be firmly established through David's descendants.
2 Samuel 7:1the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but God’s ark dwells within curtains.”2 Samuel 7:2Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart; for Yahweh is with you.”2 Samuel 7:3That same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying,2 Samuel 7:4“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh says, “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?2 Samuel 7:5For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought the children of Israel up out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle.2 Samuel 7:6In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel)), did I say a word to any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ” ’2 Samuel 7:7Now therefore tell my servant David this, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel.2 Samuel 7:8I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.2 Samuel 7:9I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not afflict them any more, as at the first,2 Samuel 7:10and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.2 Samuel 7:11When your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.2 Samuel 7:12He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.2 Samuel 7:13I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;2 Samuel 7:14but my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.2 Samuel 7:15Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.” ’ ”2 Samuel 7:16Nathan spoke to David all these words, and according to all this vision.2 Samuel 7:17Then David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?

2 Samuel 12:1The rich man had very many flocks and herds,2 Samuel 12:2but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was like a daughter to him.2 Samuel 12:3A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to prepare for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”2 Samuel 12:4David’s anger burned hot against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this deserves to die!2 Samuel 12:5He must restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!”2 Samuel 12:6Nathan said to David, “You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel), says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.2 Samuel 12:7I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.2 Samuel 12:8Why have you despised Yahweh’s word, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.2 Samuel 12:9Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken Uriah the Hittite’s wife to be your wife.’2 Samuel 12:10“This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.2 Samuel 12:11For you did this secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’ ”2 Samuel 12:12David) said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.2 Samuel 12:13However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you will surely die.”2 Samuel 12:14Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick.

The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.
1 Kings 1:22They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.1 Kings 1:23Nathan said, “My lord, king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne?’1 Kings 1:24For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live king Adonijah!’1 Kings 1:25But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.1 Kings 1:26Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”1 Kings 1:27Then king David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
1 Kings 1:38Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon). They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live king Solomon!”1 Kings 1:39All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.
