She was the second of three siblings who lived in Bethany. Her older brother was Lazarus, and her younger sister was Mary.
When Jesus came to Bethany, she was the first to welcome him and busily worked to serve him. In contrast, her sister Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his words. Because of this, she complained to Jesus, but Jesus is famous for praising Mary instead.

Later, when her brother Lazarus died, she came to Jesus, grieving, and confessed that there would be a resurrection when the Lord's day came. However, Jesus spoke not of a resurrection in the distant future, but of a present resurrection, revealing his divine power.
