Beelzebul is the god of the Philistine people, especially of Ekron. He is also called Baal-zebub, Baal-zebul, etc.
2 Kings 1:2Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and was injured. So he sent messengers, telling them, “Go and inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this injury.”2 Kings 1:3But the angel of the Lord said to Tishbite Elijah, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Ekron’s god Baal-zebub?’”
In the New Testament era, this was referred to as Satan or the devil, that is, the king of demons.
Luke 11:15But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.”Luke 11:16Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.Luke 11:17Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.Luke 11:18If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.Luke 11:19Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
Matthew 10:25It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
Matthew 12:24When the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”Matthew 12:25Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.Matthew 12:26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself.
