Josh 7:2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

It was allotted to the tribe of Benjamin.

Josh 18:12Their northern boundary began at the Jordan, went up to the north of Jericho, crossed westward through the hill country, and continued on to the wilderness of Beth-aven.
