Joshua (son of Nun) was defeated in the war when attacking the city of Ai during the Canaanite war, due to Achan's sin, and retreated to this place, Shebarim.

Josh 7:5The men of Ai killed about thirty-six of them and chased them from the city gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the slope; so the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
