God's wrath came upon the Israelites because they committed sexual immorality in the wilderness of Moab. Phinehas (son of Eleazar), whose heart was aligned with God's, was filled with jealous anger and killed the man who was committing immorality, and only then did the wrath cease. This is the man who was killed by Phinehas at that time.
