Abner was the commander of Saul's army and the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

1 Samuel 14:50Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

사울 왕이 다윗을 추격할 때 함께 하였으나

1 Samuel 26:5Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai) the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?” Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
1 Samuel 26:13and David cried to the people, and to Abner)) the son of Ner, saying, “Don’t you answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who cries to the king?”1 Samuel 26:14David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.1 Samuel 26:15This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head.”1 Samuel 26:16Saul knew David))’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

이후, 사울과 그의 세 아들이 블레셋 민족과의 전투에 사망하자, 남은 아들 이스보셋을 왕으로 세웠다.

2 Samuel 2:8and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.2 Samuel 2:9Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.2 Samuel 2:10The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

이후, 다윗과의 전쟁중 패하여 후퇴하는 중에 자신을 추격한 아사헬(다윗의 장군)을 죽였다.

2 Samuel 2:17The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.
2 Samuel 2:23But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. The sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
2 Samuel 3:6Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine?”2 Samuel 3:7Then Abner was very angry about Ishbosheth’s words, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to Saul’s house your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman!
2 Samuel 3:8God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Yahweh has sworn to David, I don’t do even so to him;2 Samuel 3:9to transfer the kingdom from Saul’s house, and to set up David’s throne over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.”2 Samuel 3:10He could not answer Abner another word, because he was afraid of him.2 Samuel 3:11Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, “Whose is the land?” and saying, “Make your alliance with me, and behold, my hand will be with you, to bring all Israel around to you.”2 Samuel 3:12He said, “Good. I will make a treaty with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you will not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”2 Samuel 3:13David sent messengers to Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I was given to marry for one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”2 Samuel 3:14Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.2 Samuel 3:15Her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, “Go! Return!” and he returned.2 Samuel 3:16Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, “In times past, you sought for David to be king over you.2 Samuel 3:17Now then do it; for Yahweh has spoken of David), saying, ‘By the hand of my servant David, I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.’ ”2 Samuel 3:18Abner) also spoke in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.2 Samuel 3:19So Abner) came to David) to Hebron, and twenty men with him. David made Abner and the men who were with him a feast.2 Samuel 3:20Abner) said to David), “I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your soul desires.” David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.2 Samuel 3:21Behold, David)’s servants and Joab came from a raid, and brought in a great plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace.

그러나, 그의 손에 죽은 아사헬의 형인 요압(다윗의 장군)은 이런 아브넬을 그냥 두지 않고 동생의 복수를 하게 되었고, 아브넬은 죽임을 당하게 된다.

2 Samuel 3:22When Joab and all the army who was with him had come, they told Joab, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has sent him away, and he has gone in peace.”2 Samuel 3:23Then Joab came to the king, and said, “What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you. Why is it that you have sent him away, and he is already gone?2 Samuel 3:24You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”2 Samuel 3:25When Joab had come out from David), he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David didn’t know it.2 Samuel 3:26When Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.2 Samuel 3:27Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahweh forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.
