This document is about Abiram (son of Hiel). For other homonyms, please refer to the Abiram document.

He was the son of Hiel, who rebuilt the city of Jericho during the time of Ahab (King of Israel).

In the past, after the city of Jericho fell during the time of Joshua (son of Nun), it was said that anyone who rebuilt this city would be cursed and lose their sons.

Josh 6:26Joshua made them take an oath at that time, saying, "Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn son shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates."

According to that curse, Abiram, Hiel's firstborn son, died.

1 Kings 16:34In his days Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn, and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Joshua the son of Nun.
