In the late period of the Judges, a battle took place between the Israelites and the Philistines, in which they suffered a great defeat and even lost the Ark of the Covenant.
1 Sam 4:1Now Israel went out to fight against the Philistines and encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek).
1 Sam 5:1When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
Later, after Samuel appeared and achieved victory, he set up a new stone and named it Ebenezer. It is presumed that this is not the same location as the one above, but a slightly distant area.
1 Sam 7:12Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
