He fought alongside his father against the Philistines and achieved victory. See 1 Samuel 13. Although he knew his father King Saul intended to kill David, he recognized David as a man of God and protected him with true friendship.

1 Samuel 18:1Saul took him that day, and wouldn’t let him go home to his father’s house any more.1 Samuel 18:2Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.1 Samuel 18:3Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him, and gave it to David, and his clothing, even including his sword, his bow, and his sash.1 Samuel 18:4David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
1 Samuel 19:1Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, and live in a secret place, and hide yourself.1 Samuel 19:2I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you.”1 Samuel 19:3Jonathan spoke good of David) to Saul his father, and said to him, “Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you;1 Samuel 19:4for he put his life in his hand, and struck the Philistine, and Yahweh worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?”1 Samuel 19:5Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan: and Saul swore, “As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death.”1 Samuel 19:6Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as before.1 Samuel 19:7There was war again. David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and killed them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him.

Don’t publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.2 Samuel 1:20You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, The shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.2 Samuel 1:21From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, Jonathan’s bow didn’t turn back. Saul’s sword didn’t return empty.2 Samuel 1:22Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.2 Samuel 1:23You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you delicately in scarlet, who put ornaments of gold on your clothing.2 Samuel 1:24How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jonathan was slain on your high places.2 Samuel 1:25I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.2 Samuel 1:26How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”2 Samuel 1:27How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”

아들로 므비보셋이 있었는데, 다윗은 왕이 된 후 요나단(사울왕의 아들)과의 우정을 생각하여 그를 찾아내어 재산을 되찾게 해주고, 평생 다윗의 상에서 같이 먹도록 하였다.
