Caesarea Philippi is a city located in the mountainous region of Mount Hermon, upstream of the Jordan River. The tetrarch Herod Philip expanded it and added Caesarea (Caesar) in commemoration of Emperor Tiberius (Tiberius Caesar), and then added his own name (Philip, Philippi).
It was here that Peter made his confession of faith, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Matt 16:13Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”Matt 16:14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”Matt 16:15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”Matt 16:16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
