He became king after Belshazzar died. He became king at the age of 62 and appointed 120 satraps to govern the entire kingdom. He established an administrative organization to rule the vast region of Media-Persia, which spanned a wide area (Dan 6:1-2). Daniel was one of the three chief ministers appointed at that time, and he seems to have performed his duties excellently "during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus" (Dan 6:28). He was forced to throw Daniel into the lion's den due to the instigation of other chief ministers and officials who were jealous of Daniel, but because of that incident, he confessed Daniel's God as "the living God, enduring forever" (Dan 6:25-27).
