📌Eliezer (Abrahams Servant)

Person
This document is about Eliezer (Abraham's_Servant). For other homonyms, please refer to the Eliezer document.

He is referred to as Eliezer of Damascus. Abram, who had no children until old age, intended to bequeath all his property to this Eliezer. At that time, in the ancient Near East, there was a custom that if there was no heir, an adopted son would be taken in and the property would be bequeathed to him. Therefore, it is presumed that this Eliezer was in a position similar to Abram's adopted son.

Gen 15:2Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”

Later, when Abraham sought a wife for Isaac, he told 'the oldest servant in his household, who was in charge of all that he had' to go to Mesopotamia and find a bride. This servant is likely Eliezer.

Gen 24:1Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.Gen 24:2He said to the oldest servant in his household, who was in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh.Gen 24:3I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,Gen 24:4but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
