그는 바벨론 포로 귀환시기에 스룹바벨과 함께 귀환하여 대제사장의 직분을 수행했다. 에스라(성경)와 느헤미야(성경)에는 예수아(요사닥의 아들)로 기록되어있다.
스가랴 3장의 기록에 의하면 그는 더러운 옷을 입고 하나님의 법정에서 사탄과 대적하는 내용이 나와있다.
Zechariah 3:1Yahweh said to Satan, “Yahweh rebuke you, Satan! Yes, Yahweh who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?”Zechariah 3:2Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the angel.Zechariah 3:3He answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, “Take the filthy garments off him.” To him he said, “Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with rich clothing.”Zechariah 3:4I said, “Let them set a clean turban on his head.” So they set a clean turban on his head, and clothed him; and Yahweh’s angel was standing by.Zechariah 3:5Yahweh’s angel protested to Joshua, saying,Zechariah 3:6“Yahweh of Armies says: ‘If you will walk in my ways, and if you will follow my instructions, then you also shall judge my house, and shall also keep my courts, and I will give you a place of access among these who stand by.Zechariah 3:7Hear now, Joshua the high priest, you and your fellows who sit before you; for they are men who are a sign: for, behold, I will bring out my servant, the Branch.Zechariah 3:8For, behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes: behold, I will engrave its engraving,’ says Yahweh of Armies, ‘and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.Zechariah 3:9In that day,’ says Yahweh of Armies, ‘you will invite every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.’ ”Zechariah 3:10In that day,’ says Yahweh of Armies, ‘you will invite every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.’ ”

Zechariah 6:9“Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah; and come the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah, where they have come from Babylon.Zechariah 6:10Yes, take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest;Zechariah 6:11and speak to him, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: and he shall grow up out of his place; and he shall build Yahweh’s temple;Zechariah 6:12even he shall build Yahweh’s temple; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule on his throne; and he shall be a priest on his throne; and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
