Place

Meribah is a word meaning "strife" or "contention," referring to the place where the Israelites complained against Moses and God when they lacked water in the wilderness during the Exodus. It was a region near Rephidim where water flowed out when Moses struck a rock. Moses also named this place Massah.

Exodus 17:1Therefore the people quarreled with Moses), and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”Numbers 20:8Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, as he commanded him.Numbers 20:9Moses) and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?”Numbers 20:10Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank.Numbers 20:11Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”Numbers 20:12These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.Numbers 20:13Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “Your brother Israel says: You know all the travail that has happened to us;
Numbers 27:14Moses spoke to Yahweh, saying,
Deuteronomy 32:51For you shall see the land from a distance; but you shall not go there into the land which I give the children of Israel.”
