When the land was distributed after the conquest of Canaan, this area was designated as one of the cities of refuge.

이후, 아람 왕 하사엘에게 빼았겼는데, 아합왕이 여호사밧(유다왕)과 연합하여 이 지역을 공격했으나 패하고 아합왕은 이 전투에서 죽고 만다.
이후 아합의 아들 요람(북이스라엘왕)과 여호사밧의 손자 아하시야(유다왕)연합군이 다시 한번 공격하였으나 여기서도 패하고 요람은 중상을 입는다. 이후 예후(북이스라엘왕)의 반란으로 요람과 아하시야는 죽임을 당하게 된다.
