[See Twelve Tribes of Israel] The Tribe of Levi, or Levites, is a tribe composed of the descendants of Levi, the third son Jacob (son of Isaac) had through Leah. This tribe was responsible for serving God as priests and in the temple for generations. Usually, the office of "priest" was given only to the descendants of Aaron, and the rest of the Levites were responsible for other services.
Numbers 3:3Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh when they offered strange fire before Yahweh in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the presence of Aaron their father.Numbers 3:4Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,Numbers 3:5“Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him.Numbers 3:6They shall keep his requirements, and the requirements of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.Numbers 3:7They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.Numbers 3:8You shall give the Levites to Aaron) and to his sons. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Israel.Numbers 3:9You shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood, but the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.”Numbers 3:10Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

Therefore I sacrifice to Yahweh all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’Exodus 13:15It shall be for a sign on your hand, and for symbols between your eyes; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”Exodus 13:16When Pharaoh had let the people go, God didn’t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt”;
Numbers 3:41Moses counted, as Yahweh commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel.
Numbers 3:39Yahweh said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.Numbers 3:40You shall take the Levites for me—I am Yahweh—instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel); and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the livestock of the children of Israel.”Numbers 3:41Moses counted, as Yahweh commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel.Numbers 3:42All the firstborn males according to the number of names from a month old and upward, of those who were counted of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three.Numbers 3:43Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,Numbers 3:44“Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock; and the Levites shall be mine. I am Yahweh.Numbers 3:45For the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel who exceed the number of the Levites,Numbers 3:46you shall take five shekels apiece for each one; according to the shekel)) of the sanctuary you shall take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs);Numbers 3:47and you shall give the money, with which their remainder is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons.”Numbers 3:48Moses took the redemption money from those who exceeded the number of those who were redeemed by the Levites;Numbers 3:49from the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel) of the sanctuary;Numbers 3:50and Moses) gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to Yahweh’s word, as Yahweh commanded Moses.Numbers 3:51and Moses) gave the redemption money to Aaron and to his sons, according to Yahweh’s word, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
Numbers 1:50When the tabernacle) is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.Numbers 1:51The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions.
Numbers 18:20“To the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the Tent of Meeting.
Numbers 18:25“Moreover you shall speak to the Levites, and tell them, ‘When you take of the children of Israel the tithe)) which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a wave offering of it for Yahweh, a tithe of the tithe.Numbers 18:26Your wave offering shall be credited to you, as though it were the grain of the threshing floor, and as the fullness of the wine press.Numbers 18:27Thus you also shall offer a wave offering to Yahweh of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Israel; and of it you shall give Yahweh’s wave offering to Aaron the priest.Numbers 18:28Out of all your gifts, you shall offer every wave offering to Yahweh, of all its best parts, even the holy part of it.’Numbers 18:29“Therefore you shall tell them, ‘When you heave its best from it, then it shall be credited to the Levites as the increase of the threshing floor, and as the increase of the wine press.
Numbers 35:1“Command the children of Israel to give to the Levites cities to dwell in out of their inheritance. You shall give pasture lands for the cities around them to the Levites.Numbers 35:2They shall have the cities to dwell in. Their pasture lands shall be for their livestock, and for their possessions, and for all their animals.Numbers 35:3“The pasture lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits around it.Numbers 35:4You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall be the pasture lands of their cities.Numbers 35:5“The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities.Numbers 35:6All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their pasture lands.Numbers 35:7Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many, and from the few you shall take few. Everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give some of his cities to the Levites.”Numbers 35:8Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
Joshua 20:7Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.Joshua 20:8These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the alien who lives among them, that whoever kills any person unintentionally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stands trial before the congregation.
