His brother is his fraternal twin, Esau. ## Jacob's Life ### Competition with Esau He was born to Isaac and Rebekah, and it is said that he competed with his brother Esau even while in the womb.
Genesis 25:26The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents.

그 뒤에 아버지는 에서에게 장자에 대한 축복을 내리려고 하였는데, 이 사실을 안 리브가와 계략을 꾸며 에서인 것처럼 속여 이삭으로부터 축복을 받아낸다.

이에 분노한 에서로부터 피신하기 위하여 외갓집인 하란으로 피신하게 된다.
하란에서 외삼촌이자 어머니 리브가의 오빠인 라반의 집에 머물게 되는데, 그곳에서 라반의 딸들과 결혼을 하게 된다.
라반에게는 두 딸 레아와 라헬이 있는데, 그중 아름다운 라헬을 사랑하게 되어 결혼하는 조건으로 라반의 집에서 7년동안 일을 해주기로 한다.
Genesis 29:15Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.Genesis 29:16Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive.Genesis 29:17Jacob loved Rachel). He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”Genesis 29:18Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.”Genesis 29:19Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.Genesis 29:20Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”
7년 뒤, 결혼을 하게 되었으나, 막상 결혼식장에 등장한 신부는 라헬이 아닌 레아였다. 이에 항의를 하자, 라반은 다시금 라헬과 결혼시키는 조건으로 7년간 다시 일하는 것을 내걸었고, 이에 야곱은 울며겨자먹기 식으로 수락을 하게 된다.
7일 후에 원래 사랑하던 라헬과 결혼을 한 뒤, 7년의 기한을 아무런 품삯없이 일을 해주게 된다.
Genesis 29:21Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.Genesis 29:22In the evening, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to Jacob. He went in to her.Genesis 29:23Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant.Genesis 29:24In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”Genesis 29:25Laban said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.Genesis 29:26Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you will serve with me for seven more years.”Genesis 29:27Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week. He gave him Rachel his daughter as wife.Genesis 29:28Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.Genesis 29:29He went in also to Rachel), and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him seven more years.Genesis 29:30Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
