He was an ally of Abraham when Abraham's nephew Lot was captured during a war between several kingdoms in the ancient land of Shinar.

Gen 14:12They also took Lot, Abram’s nephew, who was living in Sodom, and his possessions and departed.Gen 14:13A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre), the Amorite, who was a brother of Eshcol) and Aner)—all of whom were allies of Abram.Gen 14:14When Abram heard that his nephew had been captured, he called out 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan).Gen 14:15During the night Abram and his men divided into groups and attacked them. They pursued them all the way to Hobah), north of Damascus.Gen 14:16He recovered all the goods and brought back his nephew Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

After winning the war, Abraham distributed a portion of the spoils to them.

Gen 14:24I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—Aner), Eshcol) and Mamre). Let them have their share.”
