📦Tribe of Simeon

Thing

[See Twelve Tribes of Israel]

The Tribe of Simeon was a tribe descended from Simeon (son of Jacob).

In the blessing of Simeon's father, Jacob (son of Isaac), the Tribe of Simeon received a prophecy that they would be weakened and scattered, and subsequent history unfolded accordingly.

Gen 49:5Simeon and Levi are brothers; their swords are weapons of violence.Gen 49:6Let my soul not enter their council, nor my glory join their assembly, for in their anger they slew men, and in their self-will they hamstrung oxen.Gen 49:7Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.

Even when Moses gave blessings before entering Canaan, there was no blessing for the Tribe of Simeon. (See Deuteronomy 33)

After the Canaanite wars, when the land was distributed, the Tribe of Simeon did not receive a separate allocation of land and had to live within the territory of Judah.

Josh 19:1The second lot came out for Simeon, for the tribe of the children of Simeon, according to their clans, and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Judah.

Later, during the time of King Hezekiah, only about 500 members of the Tribe of Simeon went to conquer Mount Seir and barely established a foothold there.

1 Chr 4:42And some of the Simeonites, 500 men, went to Mount Seir, with Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, at their head.1 Chr 4:43They struck down the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.
