The Altar of Burnt Offering is an altar for offering burnt offerings, and it is the first place one encounters upon entering the gate of the Tabernacle or the Temple. 
The Altar of Burnt Offering is made of acacia wood (shittim wood) and covered with bronze to prevent it from burning.
Exodus 27:1You shall make its horns on its four corners. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. You shall overlay it with bronze.
이는 모세가 광야에서 놋뱀을 든 사건에서 명확해진다.

번제단의 크기는 넓이와 길이가 각기 5규빗이고, 높이가 3규빗이다. 성경에서 5는 인생의 고단함, 고난을 상징한다. 모세오경으로 대표되는 율법 아래에서 신음하는 인간들의 삶을 의미하기도 한다. 병자들이 모인 베데스다 연못의 행각이 다섯이고, 수가성 여인은 남편이 다섯이라 했다. (이는 로마서에 나오는 율법에 메인 혼인관계 비유와 일맥 상통한다.)
Exodus 29:12You shall take all the fat that covers the innards, the cover of the liver, the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar.
다윗왕이 늙었을 때 후계자를 정하지 않자 아도니야가 스스로 왕이 되려고 하는 사건이 있었다. 이 때 다윗이 솔로몬을 왕으로 세우자 아도니야는 반역자가 되었는데, 성전에 들어가 제단을 뿔을 잡고 살려주기로 약속하기 전까지는 내려가지 않겠다고 버티며 목숨을 구하는 내용이 나온다.
