He was an Edomite and the son of Zibeon. However, 1 Chronicles 1:38 states that he was generally referred to as the son of Seir. Since the term Seir itself refers to the Edomites living in Mount Seir, the detailed genealogy recorded thereafter is likely to be more accurate.
