Thumbnail Ezra was a scribe who worked together for the return of the Hebrew people and the reconstruction of Jerusalem during the period when various peoples, who had been brought in according to the peace policy of the Persian Empire, were sent back to their home countries. He is known as the author of Ezra (Bible) and Nehemiah (Bible). (Originally, these two books were one in the Hebrew Bible.) ### Historical Background The Northern Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by Assyria in 722 BC, and the Kingdom of Judah was destroyed by Babylon about 140 years later. These two empires pursued a policy of forcibly relocating and mixing various peoples from their lands.
