Iconium is located in present-day Turkey and was a strategic transportation hub from Syria to Ephesus and Rome.

During Paul's missionary journey, he performed many miracles here, and when the Jews tried to stone him, he fled.

Acts 14:1Now at Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.Acts 14:2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.Acts 14:3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed their message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.Acts 14:4The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.Acts 14:5There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.Acts 14:6But they found out about it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, towns in Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country.

During his second missionary journey, he met Timothy here.

Acts 16:1Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer, but whose father was a Greek.Acts 16:2The believers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy.
