This document is about Ishmael (son_of_Abraham). For other homonyms, please refer to the Ishmael document. Ishmael is the son born to Abraham and Hagar. He is considered the ancestor of modern Arab peoples. In Genesis 15, God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him the father of many nations through his descendants. However, in Genesis 16, at the urging of Sarah, Abraham had a child through his maidservant Hagar.
Genesis 16:16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
이후, 아브라함의 백세 때, 이삭이 태어나게 되었을 때 이스마엘의 나이는 15세가 된다. 이삭이 젖땔 때에 이스마엘이 이삭을 희롱하자 사라는 노하여 이스마엘을 쫓아내게 된다.
Genesis 21:8Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.Genesis 21:9Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this servant and her son! For the son of this servant will not be heir with my son, Isaac.”Genesis 21:10The thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.Genesis 21:11God said to Abraham, “Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your servant. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be named through Isaac.Genesis 21:12I will also make a nation of the son of the servant, because he is your child.”
어머니 하갈과 함께 브엘세바 광야를 방황하다 죽게 되었을 때에 하나님의 도움으로 물을 발견하게 되고, 이스마엘은 결국 사막에서 자라나게 된다.
Genesis 21:14The water in the container was spent, and she put the child under one of the shrubs.Genesis 21:15She went and sat down opposite him, a good way off, about a bow shot away. For she said, “Don’t let me see the death of the child.” She sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.Genesis 21:16God heard the voice of the boy. The angel of God called to Hagar out of the sky, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Don’t be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.Genesis 21:17Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him with your hand. For I will make him a great nation.”Genesis 21:18God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the container with water, and gave the boy a drink.Genesis 21:19God was with the boy, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness, and as he grew up, became an archer.Genesis 21:20He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother got a wife for him out of the land of Egypt.
