작은 야고보는 예수님의 열두제자 중 한명이다. 성경에 야고보라는 이름이 여럿이 있고, 그 중 특히 예수님의 제자 중에 야고보가 두명이어서 큰 야고보, 작은 야고보로 구분을 짓기도 한다.
작은 야고보는 또한 큰 야고보와 구분하기 위하여 알패오의 아들 야고보라고도 불리운다. (큰 야고보는 세베대의 아들 야고보라고도 불리운다.) 작은 야고보의 어머니는 예수님을 따르던 여인 중 한명인 마리아 이다.

즉, 작은 야고보의 가족관계는 아버지 알패오 어머니 마리아, 형제로는 요세가 있는 것이다.
작은 야고보로 불리우는 이유에 대해 여러가지 학설이 있다. 그 중 대표적인 것은
이렇게 있는데, 확실한 것은 없다. 다만 전승에 의하면 작은 야고보는 연약한자의 대표자로 여겨졌다는 것이다.
