[See Jacob's Family Tree] Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob (son of Isaac) and the first son of Rachel. Since Rachel was the one Jacob loved from the beginning, Jacob especially loved this 11th son throughout his life. ## Life ### Childhood: Receiving his father's favor. Joseph was the elder of the two sons born to Rachel, the wife his father Jacob loved. Jacob's affection for Joseph, Rachel's son, is first revealed when Jacob returns to the land of Canaan.
Genesis 33:1He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.Genesis 33:2He himself passed over in front of them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.Genesis 33:3Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.
여기서 보면 야곱은 에서를 만나 죽을지도 모르는 절대 절명의 순간 속에서 가장 먼저 두 여종과 그 아들들을 앞세우고,
그 다음 레아와 그 아들들을 앞세운 뒤, 자신이 서고, 라헬과 그 아들인 요셉은 자신의 뒤에 둔 것이다.
이것은 만에 하나 에서가 자신을 공격하더라도 앞서 보낸 첩들의 자식들과 레아의 자식들을 치고, 그 다음 자신을 치는 동안 도망갈 수 있도록 배치를 한 것이다.
이후, 라헬이 막내아들 베냐민을 낳고 죽으면서 야곱의 요셉과 베냐민에 대한 사랑은 더 컸다.
Genesis 37:2Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors.Genesis 37:3His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.Genesis 37:4Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

요셉이 형제들이 양을 치는 곳에 가서 상황을 살펴보려 할 때 형제들은 그동안의 시기와 미움이 폭발하여 요셉을 구덩이에 던졌다가, 미디안 사람 상인들이 지나가자 그들에게 요셉을 노예로 팔아버린다.
요셉은 애굽에서 바로의 친위대장 보디발에게 팔아넘긴다.
Genesis 39:4From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.Genesis 39:5He left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.
Genesis 39:19Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.Genesis 39:20But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.Genesis 39:21The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. 기근이 심해지자 가나안 땅에 있던 야곱은 아들들을 애굽으로 보내 곡식을 구해오게 한다.
요셉은 형들을 알아보았지만 형들은 그를 알아보지 못한 상태였다. 요셉은 친동생 베냐민의 생사도 알고 싶었기에, 정체를 밝히지 않고 형들을 첩자로 몬다. 형들은 "우리는 첩자가 아니며, 고향에 계신 아버지와 동생을 위해 곡물을 사러 온 것뿐"이라며 해명하나, 요셉은 "너희 중 한 사람이 여기 남고 나머지 사람들이 가서 막내동생을 데려오면 그 말을 믿어주겠다."라며 전부 옥에 가두어 버린다. 형들은 "우리가 요셉에게 못된 짓을 해서 벌을 받는 것"이라 불안해하고, 요셉이 시므온을 지목하여 시므온만 갖히게 되고 나머지는 고향으로 돌아가게 된다.
요셉의 형들은 아버지에게 "베냐민을 데려가야 형제가 살 수 있다"고 했으나 야곱은 거부한다.
그리고 은잔 도둑의 누명을 씌워 형제들은 다시 요셉에게 잡혀오게 된다. 요셉은 베냐민만 남기도 나머지는 돌아가라고 명하는데, 유다는 자신들의 과거 요셉에게 했던 잘못과 아버지에 대한 이야기들을 하면서 자신이 대신 남겠다고 이야기를 한다.
요셉은 110세까지 살게 되는데, 죽기 전 "언젠가 자손들이 고향에 돌아가면 가나안 땅에 묻어 달라"고 당부한다. 나중에 모세가 출애굽을 할 때에 요셉의 유골을 가지고 돌아가게 된다.
요셉은 형제들에게 은 이십에 팔려가고 예수님은 가룟 유다에게 은 삼십에 팔린다.
