Naomi is the mother-in-law of Ruth, an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 1:5Jesse became the father of King David). David became the father of Solomon by her who had been Uriah’s wife.
Ruth 1:1The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.Ruth 1:2Elimelech, Naomi)’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.Ruth 1:3They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.Ruth 1:4Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.Ruth 1:5Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.
Ruth 1:6She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.Ruth 1:7Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.Ruth 1:8May Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.Ruth 1:9They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”Ruth 1:10Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?Ruth 1:11Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons,Ruth 1:12would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.”Ruth 1:13They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her.Ruth 1:14She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”Ruth 1:15Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.Ruth 1:16Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”Ruth 1:17When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
Ruth 4:1Boaz took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here,” and they sat down.Ruth 4:2He said to the near kinsman, “Naomi, who has come back out of the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s.Ruth 4:3I thought I should tell you, saying, ‘Buy it before those who sit here, and before the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know. For there is no one to redeem it besides you; and I am after you.” He said, “I will redeem it.”Ruth 4:4Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.”Ruth 4:5The near kinsman said, “I can’t redeem it for myself, lest I endanger my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption for yourself; for I can’t redeem it.”Ruth 4:6Now this was the custom in former time in Israel) concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man took off his sandal, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the way of formalizing transactions in Israel.Ruth 4:7So the near kinsman said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” then he took off his sandal.Ruth 4:8Boaz said to the elders and to all the people, “You are witnesses today, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi.Ruth 4:9Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses today.”Ruth 4:10All the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which both built the house of Israel; and treat you worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem.Ruth 4:11Let your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the offspring which Yahweh will give you by this young woman.”Ruth 4:12So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and he went in to her, and Yahweh enabled her to conceive, and she bore a son.Ruth 4:13The women said to Naomi, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you today without a near kinsman. Let his name be famous in Israel.Ruth 4:14He shall be to you a restorer of life and sustain you in your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”Ruth 4:15Naomi took the child, laid him in her bosom, and became nurse to him.Ruth 4:16The women, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, “A son is born to Naomi”. They named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.Ruth 4:17Now this is the history of the generations of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron,Ruth 4:18and Hezron became the father of Ram, and Ram became the father of Amminadab,Ruth 4:19and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon became the father of Salmon,Ruth 4:20and Salmon became the father of Boaz), and Boaz became the father of Obed,Ruth 4:21and Obed became the father of Jesse), and Jesse became the father of David.Ruth 4:22and Obed became the father of Jesse), and Jesse became the father of David.
