She married Boaz and gave birth to a son, Obed, who was the grandfather of David. During the period of the Judges, there was a famine in the land of Judah, so Elimelech and his wife Naomi, who lived in Bethlehem, took their two sons and went to the region of Moab. There, Elimelech died, leaving only Naomi and her two sons. They married Moabite women, and one of them is Ruth, the protagonist of this text. However, after some time, both sons also died, leaving only their mother-in-law Naomi and her two daughters-in-law.

Ruth 1:1The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah. They came into the country of Moab and lived there.Ruth 1:2Elimelech, Naomi)’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.Ruth 1:3They took for themselves wives of the women of Moab. The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there about ten years.Ruth 1:4Mahlon and Chilion both died, and the woman was bereaved of her two children and of her husband.Ruth 1:5Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the country of Moab; for she had heard in the country of Moab how Yahweh had visited his people in giving them bread.

그러던 와중 유다 땅에 하나님의 은혜가 임해 식량이 회복되었다는 소식을 듣는다. 나오미는 두 며느리에게 본 민족으로 돌아가라고 이야기하였으나, 룻은 나오미와 함께 유대 공동체 안으로 들어오겠다고 결정을 한다.

Ruth 1:6She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.Ruth 1:7Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.Ruth 1:8May Yahweh grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.Ruth 1:9They said to her, “No, but we will return with you to your people.”Ruth 1:10Naomi said, “Go back, my daughters. Why do you want to go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?Ruth 1:11Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, ‘I have hope,’ if I should even have a husband tonight, and should also bear sons,Ruth 1:12would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.”Ruth 1:13They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth stayed with her.Ruth 1:14She said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Follow your sister-in-law.”Ruth 1:15Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.Ruth 1:16Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”Ruth 1:17When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.Ruth 1:18So they both went until they came to Bethlehem). When they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was excited about them, and they asked, “Is this Naomi?”
Ruth 2:2She went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.Ruth 2:3Behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “May Yahweh be with you.” They answered him, “May Yahweh bless you.”

그렇게 만나게 된 보아스는 나오미의 죽은 남편 엘리멜렉의 친척이었다. 그래서 엘리멜렉에게 할당되었던 땅을 되찾아줄 역할을 담당할수 있었다. (기업 무름)

이에 나오미는 룻을 보아스가 자는 방에 들여보내 그 뜻을 알리고 보아스에게 기업무름을 요청하게 된다.

Ruth 3:1Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor.Ruth 3:2Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor; but don’t make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.Ruth 3:3It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lay down. Then he will tell you what to do.”Ruth 3:4She said to her, “All that you say, I will do.”Ruth 3:5She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her.Ruth 3:6When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and laid down.Ruth 3:7At midnight, the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet.Ruth 3:8He said, “Who are you?” She answered, “I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman.”Ruth 3:9He said, “You are blessed by Yahweh, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, because you didn’t follow young men, whether poor or rich.

이에 보아스는 자신 보다 앞 순위의 친족에게 기업무를 의무를 행할 것인지를 물었고, 그 사람의 거절의사를 확실히 받은 뒤에 룻과 결혼하여 자녀 오벳을 낳는다.

Ruth 4:13The women said to Naomi, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you today without a near kinsman. Let his name be famous in Israel.Ruth 4:14He shall be to you a restorer of life and sustain you in your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”
