The Sanhedrin Council was the highest Jewish self-governing body in Jerusalem during the New Testament era.
It was composed of 71 individuals from among the Jews, including former and current high priests, influential figures from prominent families, scribes, and representatives from each tribe, and was responsible for making important political decisions.
All instances referred to as "council" in the Bible refer to this Sanhedrin Council.
Mark 15:1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin—had reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
Acts 5:34But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the apostles be taken outside for a little while.
