Sergius Paulus was a Roman proconsul who governed the region of Cyprus.

Acts 13:7who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. He sent for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.

He is presumed to have been a person with great interest in spiritual matters. Therefore, he not only kept the magician Bar-Jesus by his side but also showed interest in the gospel preached by Paul, inviting them to hear the gospel. And when he saw Paul blind Bar-Jesus by the power of God, he was astonished and believed the gospel.

Acts 13:8But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.Acts 13:9But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at himActs 13:10and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?Acts 13:11And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking someone to lead him by the hand.Acts 13:12Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
