Tax Collector refers to a person who collected taxes on behalf of the Roman Empire in biblical times.
They would determine and send the annual tax amount to the Roman Empire, and any amount exceeding that became their own property. Because of this, they accumulated great wealth, and the Israelites, who were oppressed by Rome, greatly detested them.
