This document is about **Zechariah (son of Barachiah)**. For other homonyms, please refer to the Zechariah document.
A person mentioned by Jesus as having been martyred.
Matt 23:35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
Luke 11:51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the temple. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
However, there is no figure named Zechariah, son of Barachiah, in the Old Testament. However, the context of the passage speaks of a flow from Abel, the first martyr, to the last martyr, so this Zechariah could be the last martyr.
If that is the case, the most likely person would be Zechariah, son of Jehoiada.
2 Chr 24:20Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’”2 Chr 24:21But they conspired against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.2 Chr 24:22King Joash did not remember the kindness Jehoiada, Zechariah’s father, had shown him, but killed his son. As he lay dying, Zechariah said, “May the Lord see this and call you to account.”
