The capital of the Assyrian Empire. Jonah (prophet) delivered a message of repentance here, and the people repented. According to the Book of Jonah, it was a very large city, so vast that it would take three days to walk around its entirety.
However, about 100 years later, Nahum (prophet) again prophesied the destruction of Nineveh.
Nahum 1:14The Lord has given a command concerning you: “You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the carved images and cast idols in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile.”
Nineveh and Assyria were destroyed by the combined forces of Babylon and Media.
