Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab (King of Israel) and Jezebel, who married Jehoram (King of Judah) and became queen. Later, after her son Ahaziah (King of Judah) died, she annihilated all remaining royal offspring of Judah and usurped the throne herself. Jehoshaphat (King of Judah) was a king who feared God, but he was influenced by his close relationship with Ahab (King of Israel), who was the king of the northern kingdom of Israel at the time. Ultimately, he arranged a political marriage between Ahab's daughter and his own son, Jehoram.
2 Chronicles 21:5He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did Ahab’s house; for he had Ahab’s daughter as his wife. Then Athaliah tore her clothes, and said, “Treason! treason!”2 Chronicles 23:13Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out between the ranks; and whoever follows her, let him be slain with the sword.” For the priest said, “Don’t kill her in Yahweh’s house.”2 Chronicles 23:14So they made way for her. She went to the entrance of the horse gate to the king’s house; and they killed her there.2 Chronicles 23:15Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king, that they should be Yahweh’s people.
