He was a centurion who joined forces when Jehoiada (priest during Joash's time) staged a coup against Athaliah and enthroned Joash (King of Judah).
2 Chr 23:1In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, and entered into a covenant with them.2 Chr 23:2They went about in Judah and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.2 Chr 23:3And all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And Jehoiada said to them, “Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the Lord has spoken concerning the descendants of David.2 Chr 23:4This is what you are to do: A third of you, priests and Levites, who are on duty on the Sabbath, are to be gatekeepers;2 Chr 23:5a third are to be at the king's palace; and a third at the Foundation Gate. All the other people are to be in the courtyards of the house of the Lord.
