Jairus was a synagogue official in Capernaum during the time of Jesus' ministry.

Mark 5:22Then one of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feetMark 5:23and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will get well and live.”

He had a twelve-year-old only daughter, and when she became seriously ill and was about to die, he came to Jesus.

Luke 8:41Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue official, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his houseLuke 8:42because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.

However, while Jesus was on his way, a woman suffering from a hemorrhage touched Jesus' cloak and was healed, and this delayed the journey to Jairus. Eventually, a message arrived that his daughter had died.

Luke 8:49While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official and said, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.”

Nevertheless, Jesus went to Jairus' house and performed a miracle, bringing the child back to life.

Luke 8:51When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother.Luke 8:52Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”Luke 8:53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.Luke 8:54But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”Luke 8:55Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.Luke 8:56Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
