He was a centurion who joined forces when Jehoiada (priest during Joash's time) staged a coup against Athaliah to enthrone Joash (King of Judah).

2 Chron 23:1In the seventh year Jehoiada took courage and made a covenant with the commanders of hundreds: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri.2 Chron 23:2They went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the towns of Judah and the heads of families of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.2 Chron 23:3The whole assembly made a covenant with the king in the temple of God. Jehoiada said to them, “The king’s son shall reign, as the Lord promised concerning the descendants of David.2 Chron 23:4Now this is what you are to do: A third of you, priests and Levites, who are on duty on the Sabbath, are to act as gatekeepers;2 Chron 23:5a third are to be at the palace, and a third at the Foundation Gate. All the other people are to be in the courts of the temple of the Lord.
