Ish-bosheth was the son of King Saul, and became king of Israel for a short time after King Saul's death.
2 Sam 2:8Now Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken Saul’s son Ish-bosheth and crossed over to Mahanaim.2 Sam 2:9He made him king over Gilead, Ashuri, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin and all Israel.
His original name was Ishvi.
1 Sam 14:49Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The names of his two daughters were these: the older one was Merab and the younger was Michal.
He was also called Eshbaal by another name.
1 Chr 8:33Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal.
The word 'Baal' originally meant "master," but later became the name of a Canaanite pagan god. As a result, within the Israelite nation, names containing 'Baal' began to be changed to Bosheth (shame, disgrace). Thus, Ishbaal (Eshbaal) was changed to Ish-bosheth.
Later, after being defeated in a war with David and retreating, he was killed by his subordinates, and the kingdom of Israel passed to the Davidic dynasty.
