Dan is the fifth of Jacob's twelve sons.
Gen 35:25The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.Gen 35:26The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
His mother, Bilhah, was Rachel's maidservant. When Rachel could not conceive, she sent Bilhah to Jacob, and when Dan was born, she adopted him as her own child.
Gen 30:6Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.
