Gedaliah was the son of Ahikam. In other places, he is recorded as Gedaliah. He was appointed governor of the region of Judah after the Kingdom of Judah was destroyed by Babylon.

However, he was killed in a rebellion led by Ishmael (son of Nethaniah), one of the commanders who led the remaining army of the Kingdom of Judah at the time.

2 Kings 25:22As for the people who remained in the land of Judah, whom Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar had left, he appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to govern them.2 Kings 25:23When all the commanders of the forces and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah as governor, they came to Gedaliah at MizpahIshmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, and their men.2 Kings 25:24Gedaliah swore to them and their men, “Do not be afraid of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.”2 Kings 25:25In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood, came with ten men and struck down Gedaliah, so that he died, and also the Jews and the Chaldeans who were with him at Mizpah.
