[See Jacob's Family Tree] Reuben is the firstborn of Jacob (son of Isaac)'s twelve sons. His mother is Leah.
Genesis 29:32She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” She named him Simeon.
이름의 뜻은 [보라 아들이라]는 뜻이다. 남편과 먼저 결혼을 했으나 사랑은 받지 못했던 레아의 비천함을 돌아보신 하나님의 은혜에 대한 감사의 표시로 볼 수 있다.
그래서 어느날 들에서 추수작업을 하던 중 합환채를 발견하자 그것을 어머니인 레아에게 드렸다.
Genesis 30:14Leah said to her, “Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes, also?” Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”Genesis 30:15Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, “You must come in to me; for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” He lay with her that night.Genesis 30:16God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.
그러나 라헬이 그 합환채를 빼앗으려 하자 그것을 주는 대신 야곱과의 동침을 얻어낸다.
이후, 요셉이 아버지의 사랑을 독차지하는 데에 대한 질투로 형제들이 요셉을 죽이려 하자 죽이지는 않도록 말리는 모습을 보인다.
Genesis 37:21Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. 사실 르우벤은 장손으로 이후에 이스라엘 12지파의 대표가 되기 합당한 지위였으나, 그가 서모 빌하와 통간하는 죄를 저지르는 바람에 아버지로부터 받는 하나님의 축복을 받지 못하게 된다.

이후, 르우벤 뿐만 아니라 그 후손들인 르우벤 지파 역시 열두 지파 가운데 크게 융성하지 못하고 그저 그런 지파로 남게 된다.

혹자는 르우벤이 받았어야 할 제사권은 레위에게, 상속권은 요셉(야곱의 아들)에게 넘어갔다고 해석을 하기도 한다.
