Potiphar was the man who bought Joseph when he was sold into slavery in Egypt, and he was the captain of the guard for Pharaoh at the time.

Gen 37:36Meanwhile, the Midianites had sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.
Gen 39:1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

He was a man of great power, and seeing Joseph skillfully handle various tasks through God's grace, he entrusted him with the management of his household. Later, when his wife tried to seduce Joseph and failed, she falsely accused him in revenge, leading Joseph to be imprisoned.

Gen 39:19When his master heard the story his wife told him—“This is how your slave treated me”—he burned with anger.Gen 39:20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,Gen 39:21the Lord was with Joseph and showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

However, he does not appear again after this incident.
