Place Name

Bethlehem is a city south of Jerusalem, famous as the birthplace of Jesus and David. It means "house of bread," combining "Beth," meaning house, and "lehem," meaning bread. This name also symbolizes Jesus Christ, who is the bread of life. Thumbnail It was formerly called Ephrath or Ephrathah.

Ruth 1:2The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went to the country of Moab and remained there.
Micah 5:2But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.

As can be seen from the book of Ruth above, Boaz, a direct ancestor of Jesus and a symbol of Jesus, was also from Bethlehem. (Ruth's father-in-law was from Bethlehem, and Boaz, a distant relative, was also from Bethlehem.)

Their descendants continued to live in Bethlehem, so David was also from Bethlehem.

1 Samuel 16:1The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

Son of Salma

1 Chronicles 2:54The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth-beth-joab, and half of the Manahathites, the Zorites.
