Ekron is one of the five major strongholds of the Philistine people. For reference, the five cities are Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron.

Initially, during the Canaanite conquest, it was a region that was not fully occupied.

Later, during the period of the Judges, it was occupied by the tribe of Judah.
After that, it became Philistine territory again, and its ownership continued to change.
