This document is about Shechem (Son of Hamor). For other homonyms, please refer to the Shechem document.
He was the son of Hamor, who was the chief of the Hivites, an indigenous people of Canaan.
They were living in Shechem (place name) when Jacob (son of Isaac) returned with his family.
At that time, he saw Jacob's daughter Dinah come out to play and forcibly violated her. However, afterwards, he was pleased with Dinah and formally requested a marriage alliance.
Enraged by this, Dinah's brothers Simeon and Levi killed him.
Refer to Genesis 34.
Later records show that Jacob purchased this area of Shechem (place name) from other brothers, not this Shechem.
Joshua 24:32The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob had bought for a hundred qesitahs from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. It became the inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.
