[See Twelve Disciples]
Matthew was one of Jesus' twelve disciples and recorded the Gospel of Matthew.

He was originally from Galilee and worked as a tax collector in Capernaum.
In other Gospels, he is recorded as 'Levi', which may be his surname or another nickname.
Mark 2:14As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
Here he is referred to as the son of 'Alphaeus', and James the Less is also recorded as the son of 'Alphaeus'.
However, there is no record in the Bible that these two were brothers, so it is not confirmed whether they were siblings.
He lived a life of scorn as a tax collector, but after being called by Jesus, he became a disciple.
Matt 9:9As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.Matt 9:10And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.Matt 9:11And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”Matt 9:12But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.Matt 9:13Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
After this, there are no special records of him.
According to tradition, he went to the East and was martyred.
